Reign of Elizabeth I, Queen of England at the end of 1500, marked an intellectual Renaissance. Unfortunately, also marked the era of intensified persecution of witches, persecution supported by the Queen, which is said to be devout beings - always lending your ear to the clergy and the position of their bad advice. It may also be concerned about your safety.
She's mother, Anne Boleyn was accused of Witch. As the daughter Witch these days can be very easily be misconstrued by the hereditary rivals, which would undoubtedly lose the throne, and even loss of life.
Witchcraft practiced during the reign of Queen is determined by the Elizabethan Witchcraft, ironically appearing to offer its credit its existence, while in truth was partly responsible for the near collapse.
As indicated earlier, the Elizabethan era saw the revival of faith in supernatural terms. One would imagine that the intellectually enlightened minds of the end of 1500 would see the world differently to the likes of Pope Innocent views VIII in the 1000's. While at first glance a contradiction in itself, the dynamics of sudden availability of information (or misinformation, if you want) caused by running the printer Johann Gutenberg around 1456, explains this phenomenon.
Large number of printed books - mainly the Bible and books containing religious themes. Unfortunately, these themes reinforced belief in the supernatural and the authors were mostly Christian protagonists - proponents theory that Witchcraft (and the definition of Witches) was evil and that they were married with the devil. Most of these so-called experts agreed the British Isles were overrun by a plague of witches and had to be dealt with immediately.
This led to harassment, while to an increase in executions. The fact that the printing press also enabled the publishing of books on astrology, alchemy and Magic, only exacerbates the problem already burning. In 1562 Elizabeth I passed Elizabethan Witchcraft Act "against spells, incantations and spells." The Act certainly more severe than in Italy and Spain. Do not combine acts of heresy with acts of magic. It also offered punishment by hanging, not burning and disallowed the torture of suspects.
But who was so hated and feared witches? This is summed up their story. Once upon a time, before the start of burning Witches were considered "smart" by all. They were in the mid-wives, healers, counselors and those who worked magic when magic was needed in someone's life. They enabled discussions with relatives the dead and looking to the future for those who need a light on their way.
They were honored and valued. Traditionally, oral tradition, Witchcraft was passed from mother to daughter or Witch to Apprentice - generation after generation. Burning Times all but destroyed this tradition. Craft of the Wise had to resort to hiding to survive and after nearly 500 years of the Burning Times, Elizabethan Witches were also underground.
