Ahh blind optimism - there is always a lot of that going around at the beginning of a season.
Look, the Magic are much improved for three reasons. One, Dwight Howard is a year older. Two, Lewis is the best natural scorer they've had in a long time. And three, Stan Van Gundy is one of the best minds in the game and had more respect from the players on day one than Brian Hill ever had. He will know how to eliminate the 10 to 15 game lulls of focus and concentration that have plagued this team the last two years. This team is perfectly capable of winning the division.
But, the finals? Please. Howard is fantastic, but still under-developed as a scorer. Lewis is going to struggle at times since this is his first experience as a #1 scoring option. These two need a season together to learn to play off of each other. Nelson is not an elite point guard. Those times when Howard and Lewis are struggling at the same time is when Nelson will need to take over (ala Chauncey Billups). He may do that successfully a few times during the regular season, but will not be able to do it under the severe defensive pressure of the playoffs. JJ Redic can do one thing, and one thing only - shoot. At all other aspects of the game, he is a liability. And, in a playoff series against a team that vigorously defends the perimeter (Detroit, Chicago), he will disappear.
Playoff contender? - yes; possible division champ? - yes; finals contender - not this year.
